Tradizionalmente il tema del data warehouse (DW) è stato trattato in termini meccanicistici basati sul presupposto che l'investimento in tecnologia porti a soluzioni predeterminate. L'osservazione di casi empirici sembra contraddire questa tesi portando in primo piano il ruolo delle persone e dei risultati emergenti dall'uso dello strumento. Al tal fine esaminiamo l'uso dello strumento in tre organizzazioni che impiegano il DW da oltre quattro anni, adottano lo stesso software e hanno ormai raggiunto un utilizzo regolare. Attraverso un'approfondita analisi sul campo, il lavoro mostra come gli obiettivi che hanno guidato l'adozione dello strumento e i modi d'uso emersi abbiano portato a risultati diversi e non predeterminati.

Traditionally the data warehouse (DW) has been treated in purely technical terms based on the hypothesis that the investment in technology would necessarily bring about predetermined solutions. The observation of empirical cases seems to contradict this point of view by placing the role of people and the emergent use of technology in first place. The paper examines the results of DW use in three organizations that have been using it for four years, using the same software in their recurrent practices. This project aims at identifying the emergent uses of DW and the driving forces that seem to bring forth different and unexpected results.
