This paper aims at understanding the role of the particular structure of the Italian manufacturing industry in affecting the in- vestments in R&D. Although it is well known that the Italian in­ dustry is characterised by a high weight of small enterprises and in­dustrial sectors which production requires technologies operated by low-skilled workers, so far no attempt has been done to "measure" the effect of these factors on R&D. In this work it is shown that by taking the Italian manufacturing industry structure into account, the R&D increases but still remains lower than that invested in the main advanced countries [JEL Classification: 030, L11, L16, L60].

In questo lavoro si tenta di quantificare il ruolo svolto dalle caratteristiche produttive e dimensionali dell'industria italiana nel determinare l'entità dell'investimento in ricerca e sviluppo (R&S). L'analisi muove da una breve descrizione dell'attività di R&S, in­ quadra questa attività nel contesto delle tendenze in atto a livello internazionale, e successivamente fornisce una misura di quanto i risultati osservati dipendano dal tipo di specializzazione settoriale dell'industria italiana e dalla forte presenza — in tutte le produ­ zioni — di imprese di piccola dimensione.
