The Impact of Elderly Parents
on Labour Market Participation
of Italian Women

Nel presente lavoro, viene studiata empiricamente la relazione esistente
tra partecipazione femminile al mercato del lavoro e le gami
familiari intergenerazionali utilizzando i dati provenienti dall'Indagine
Banca d'Italia sui bilanci delle famiglie italiane del 2000.
In particolare, viene analizzato il duplice ruolo di soggetti care-de
manding e care-giving degli anziani nel determinare
le scelte la vorative delle donne italiane. I risultati
delle stime mostrano che la probabilità di partecipare
al mercato del lavoro è minore per le donne che
devono dedicare tempo alla cura di un anziano, men tre
la presenza di anziani care-giving favorisce la partecipazione. Quest'ultimo
effetto é particolarmente rilevante per le donne con figli
in età pre-scolare.
We use data from the Bank of
Italy's 2000 Survey of House hold Income and Wealth (SHIW) to
analyse the empirical rela tionship between Italian female labour
market participation and intergenerational family links. The
paper focuses in particular on the twofold care-demanding and
care-giving role of elderly relatives in explaining the work
patterns of women. Our estimates show that the probability of
participation is lower for women who dedicate time to
caring for elderly parents and that informal help provided by
seniors strongly encourages female participation. The positive
effect of elderly parents support on participation is par ticularly
relevant for women with pre-school children [JEL Classification:
