The article deals with the main features of social mobility
processes in contemporary Italy and their changes during the
twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Both absolute
(intergenerational and career) mobility and patterns of associations
between class of origin and destination in three birth cohorts are
studied. The analyses confirm a quite modest shift towards greater
social fluidity in the allocation of individuals among the different
occupational positions. Nevertheless, ascription still prevails over
achievement, and this prevalence is strengthened by the process of
family formation, which is based on rather effective mechanisms

Il saggio considera i principali lineamenti dei processi di mobilità
sociale che si sono verificati in Italia tra l’inizio del XX secolo
e quello del XXI. In particolare, sono analizzati i flussi di mobilità
e, attraverso alcuni modelli log-lineari, l’intensità dei condizionamenti
esercitati dalle classi di provenienza su quelle di arrivo.
Queste analisi sono state articolate attorno a tre coorti anagrafiche.
I risultati confermano un lieve aumento nel tempo della
fluidità sociale. Ciononostante, le caratteristiche ascritte prevalgono
su quelle acquisite anche per effetto del processo di selezione
del coniuge che rimane ancora caratterizzato da incisivi meccanismi
di chiusura sociale.
